Three Swiss musicians shape this concert with music from the 20th and 21st century. Matthias Ziegler, who is known not least for his own flute developments is the soloist in Benjamin Yusupovs atmospheric flute concerto ‘NOLA’ , written especially for him. For his farewell concert as a lecturer in improvisation at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), he performed Philipp Classen’s concerto ‘Evolution’ for two improvising soloists. Drummer Lucas Niggli was already at his side for the premiere – the duo will reunite in Winterthur. For others, this repertoire may be a daunting task, but Baldur Brönnimann feels completely at home in this world. As director of the Contemporary Conducting Academy at the Lucerne Festival and a specialist in modern music, he will bring out previously unheard details in the works. From John Cage’s aleatoric work Atlas Eclipticalis, in which the star atlas was copied onto music paper, to the two picturesque solo concertos and Kurt Weill’s accessible Second Symphony: this evening will resonate for a long time in the memory.

Unter Tieren – among animals a concert presented by Lesegesellschaft Stäfa

Graziella Rossi – voice; Helmut Vogel – voice; Matthias Ziegler – Flutes; Christoph Baumann – Piano

Humans and animals, animals and their humans – a comedy of collisions.
This unusual musical theatre production is based on Dieter Bachmann’s book ‘Unter Tieren’ (Among Animals) and gives a voice to those who cannot speak and who are, for the most part, mistreated or exterminated. In other words, animals. The animal world, and indeed the world itself, is more endangered than ever before in the history of the planet. The text collage, a scenic condensation of Bachmann’s award-winning work, captivates with its absurd dialogues, musical collages and stirring prose passages.
In the quartet of Graziella Rossi and Helmut Vogel, together with Christoph Baumann on piano and Matthias Ziegler on his self-created flutes, it becomes a beacon for the survival of animals – before it could be too late for everyone.
